WINTER WINE SELECTIONS

At  Bannockburn Station we are very proud of the high quality of wineries in Victoria, both local and further afield and so we would like to share some more information on some of our favorite vineyards.

BANNOCKBURN VINEYARDS

Featured Wines: 2016 'Gilt by Association' Chardonnay & 2012 Bannockburn Shiraz

Stuart Hooper envisioned creating a vineyard that would produce Australian wine of a quality to emulate the great regions of France.

In the early 1970's he selected a plot of land in the Moorabool Valley. A promising site with the desirable soil composition consistent with quality viticulture and a rich history of premium wine grape production dating back to the 1870's. The initial plantings were shiraz vines. Before long, more land was acquired, more vines and varieties planted - the story had begun.

A major contribution to the success of Bannockburn Vineyards was the strong foundation Stuart provided through his purist, uncompromising approach when he established the vineyard and winery. Everything was done with a commitment to producing quality wine.

AUSTINS & CO

Featured Wines: 2016 Pinot Noir & NV 6Ft6 Prosecco

In 1982, Pamela and Richard Austin purchased a small 5 acre block in Waurn Ponds, Victoria. Over the years, this passion developed and grew into a desire to make wine for not only friends, but for the general public as well.

In 1990 they made the decision to expand, purchased 800 acres in the Moorabool Valley and set about planting a new vineyard.  Over the course of five years they established 150 acres of vines, and Austins & Co. was born.

For more than thirty years, the Austin family’s bold venture has crafted Pinot Noir for the people, as well as Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz to be seriously shared.

LETHBRIDGE WINES

Featured Wines: 2015 Pinot Gris, 2017 'Between Five Bells' Rose & 2014 Pinot Meuniere

Lethbridge Wines was founded by three scientists, Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas who recognised the importance of terroir (soil, climate, aspect and bio-diversity) in the production of distinctive wines.

The fruit comes from the Estate Vineyard in Lethbridge, originally planted in 1874 by Swiss immigrants, as well as a  vineyard in Mt Duneed, first planted in 1858.

The wines are produced on site in a unique load bearing straw-bale winery designed for its ability to recreate the controlled environment of cellars and caves. This innovative building marries the owners’ commitment to biodynamic farming, environmental sustainability and production of fine wine.

DEL RIOS WINERY

Featured Wines: 2015 'Anarchist' Shiraz, Pinot, Cab, Merlot & 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon

In 2004, the fully equipped winery was built on site, which includes a bottling and labeling line. The fruit is handpicked and whole bunch pressed for the white wines. Later the wine is quality assessed and the best premium wine is allocated to the Del Rios label or to thesecond range called Mayhem@Anakie. French oak barrels are used exclusively. Del Rios can comfortably process over 150 tonnes and have tank space to hold this. The large range of small tanks allows individual parcels of wines to be processed and kept separate.

MARCUS HILL VINEYARD

Featured Wines: 2016 'People Madly Stomping' Pinot Noir

The small vineyard was established on the Bellarine Peninsula in 1999 with the intention to grow premium quality grapes in an environment where natural balance is encouraged.

The vineyard adjoins substantial plantings of indigenous trees and shrubs, home to creatures which provide natural pest control for the vines – no pesticides are required.

The wine is made in a manner which is sympathetic to our site and area, which produces elegant, delicate and feminine wines. The grapes are picked by hand in small parcels, often with family and friends. The produce is handcrafted and adopts minimal intervention, handling and processing principles.

LEURA PARK ESTATE

Featured Wines: 2016 Sauvignon Blanc & 2017 Grand Vintage Sparkling Blanc de Blanc

Situated in the heart of the stunning Bellarine Peninsula, Leura Park Estate is a 150 acre property with 40 acres planted to vine. Varietals grown onsite include Sauvignon BlancPinot GrisChardonnayPinot Noir and Shiraz. We also have six acres planted to Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon respectively on a 250 acre property near St. Leonards adjoining the picturesque Swan Bay shores. The Bellarine’s terroir is often referred to as mirroring attributes of two of the most acclaimed wine growing regions in the world, Burgundy and Bordeaux. The estate enjoys a cool maritime climate which embraces long, slow ripening periods and a moderate to low rainfall which results in relatively low yielding but high quality fruit.

MOUNT AVOCA

Featured wines: 2014 'Moates Lane' Shiraz & Chardonnay

Modern day pioneers, the Barry family have created Mount Avoca’s award winning wines on the estate since 1970. From the cool climate organically managed vineyard, grapes are crushed and crafted into extraordinary wines featuring great varietal character and regional distinction. Experience 40 years of tradition and innovation and share our passion in their stone tasting room, overlooking the vineyards and Pyrenees Ranges. From July 2016, the Mount Avoca winery and vineyard is Australian Certified Organic.
